The devastated husband of a female PE teacher accused of sexually abusing a male student sobbed as he waited outside his wife's court case.

Tayla Lee Brailey,30,appeared in Liverpool Local Court on Thursday, charged with sexually abusing a 17-year-old boy she taught at a high school in Sydney's southwest.

Police will allege two of the offences, sexual touching and sexual intercourse without consent, took place in West Wollongong, her home suburb,in early to mid July.

She also allegedly raped the minor on July 26 in the same suburb as the school.

As Brailey appeared in court via video link from Amber Laurel Correctional Centre, dressed in grey track pants and a hoodie, her parents sat side-by-side in court,an arm wrapped around each other's waist.

Noticeably distraught but trying to remain composed, the couple were at times overcome by emotion, breaking down in tears when Magistrate Imad Abdul-Karim noted the alleged offences carried prison sentences.

Brailey and her father also let out a gasp when it was revealed during the prosecution's attempt to impose a suppression order that the media had already widely reported the case.

Aside from occasional emotional outbursts,Brailey remained quiet throughout the hearing, resting her head on her hands and looking down at the floor.
